Feeling Unfulfilled and the Questions That Arise
“Is this really the life I want to live?”
Lately, I’ve been asking myself this question more and more. I currently work at a major manufacturing company. My job provides a stable income and social credibility. However, deep down, I can’t shake the feeling that something is missing.
Every day, I go through the same routine, working towards the company’s goals. But when I think about whether my work is truly contributing to society, I can’t help but have doubts. Then, it hit me—perhaps the reason I feel unfulfilled is that I’m not spending my time on what I truly want to do.
Reevaluating My Passions—What Can I Do?
I enjoy running my blog, sharing my experiences and thoughts with others. It means a lot to me when my words resonate with someone. I also want to continue working as a counselor, helping people through their struggles and providing support.
Recently, I’ve also become interested in illustration. Being able to communicate not just through words but also visually might allow me to reach people on a deeper level. And then, a new passion emerged—I want to work in clean energy.
Why Clean Energy?
After becoming disabled, I began thinking more deeply about how society is structured. Welfare systems, employment, human relationships—through my experiences, I realized that not everyone is able to live comfortably within the current system.
Similarly, our planet is facing enormous challenges due to human activity. If we continue down this path, what kind of future will we leave for the next generations? The struggles I face as a disabled person and the environmental crisis our world is facing feel strangely connected.
Renewable energy, decarbonization, a sustainable future—these ideas started to resonate with me. If I could contribute to the field of clean energy, even in a small way, I might be able to find a sense of purpose beyond just having a job.
The Limitations of Working for a Major Corporation
My current workplace is not a bad environment. However, I increasingly feel that my values don’t fully align with the company’s.
The relentless pursuit of efficiency and profit—while not inherently wrong—often makes me question whether we are truly prioritizing sustainability and societal impact.
Moreover, as part of a large organization, my individual voice rarely influences broader decisions. There is always a gap between what I want to do and what the company requires me to do.
So, I started to wonder: “Is there a way for me to make a living doing work that truly aligns with my values?”
Choosing the Path of Parallel Work
Quitting my corporate job immediately to pursue clean energy full-time would be difficult. That’s why I began considering parallel work, a lifestyle where I combine multiple careers.
The Parallel Work Model I Envision
Blogging
→ Sharing insights on disability, parallel work, and clean energy.
Counseling
→ Supporting people by drawing from my own experiences.
Illustration
→ Creating visuals to enhance my blog and counseling work.
Clean Energy-Related Work
→ Exploring opportunities such as working with environmental NGOs, marketing eco-friendly products, and writing about renewable energy.
By combining different careers, I hope to create a work-life balance that is both fulfilling and impactful.
A Life That Inspires and Gains Support
Of course, parallel work comes with challenges—financial stability, time management, and setting priorities. However, more than anything, I fear spending my life feeling unfulfilled and disconnected from what truly matters to me.
Some might ask,
“Why leave a stable job for something uncertain?”
“Can you really work in clean energy without prior experience?”
But I believe that living an unfulfilled life is a much greater risk than stepping into the unknown.
I have decided to take action. While I won’t quit my job immediately, I will gradually explore opportunities in clean energy. I want to document this journey on my blog, sharing my challenges and discoveries.
If this resonates with you, I’d love for you to share your thoughts.
Are you interested in parallel work?
Do you work in clean energy?
Are you also struggling with feeling unfulfilled in your career?
If so, please share your insights and experiences with me.
I will continue to pursue the life I truly want—a life where I can contribute to society in a meaningful way.
