Introduction: Am I Happy?
“Am I happy?”

This is a question I have asked myself countless times.

As a person who became severely disabled later in life, my reality has changed significantly.
My career options have become limited, my daily life is affected by my physical condition, and my relationships with people have evolved.

This has forced me to constantly reflect on the question: What is happiness?

I’ve realized that merely chasing momentary pleasures isn’t enough—I need to focus on what brings me genuine, lasting happiness.
If you have ever pondered the same question, I hope this article will offer some insight.

The Difference Between Pleasure and Happiness
Pleasure is Temporary Satisfaction
Pleasure is the sense of joy and comfort that lasts for a short while.
For example:
✅ Enjoying delicious food
✅ Indulging in hobbies
✅ Traveling to new places

These experiences are fun and fulfilling in the moment.
However, their effects fade over time, leaving us seeking the next momentary thrill.

Happiness is Long-Term Fulfillment
Happiness, on the other hand, is a state of long-term contentment.
For example:
✅ Building deep, trusting relationships
✅ Finding purpose in work and daily activities
✅ Living in a way that aligns with personal values

Unlike pleasure, happiness is something that grows over time and is shaped by our choices and beliefs.

What I Realized About Happiness as a Disabled Person
Can I Pursue the Same Happiness as Before?
After becoming disabled, I initially believed that true happiness meant regaining the life I had before.
I thought I needed to:
✅ Work just as I did before
✅ Engage in activities I used to enjoy
✅ Maintain the same lifestyle as when I was able-bodied

But reality was different.

✅ I could no longer do many things I used to take for granted
✅ Returning to my previous career was not possible in the same way
✅ Pushing myself to live like before only brought frustration and exhaustion

Eventually, I realized: Happiness is not about clinging to the past—it’s about finding new ways to live in the present.

Choosing Fulfillment Over Temporary Pleasure
After much reflection, I began to prioritize long-term fulfillment over temporary pleasure.

✅ Writing blogs to share my experiences and inspire others
✅ Providing counseling to support people struggling with similar challenges
✅ Working at a pace that suits my body and mental well-being

Instead of seeking fleeting joys, I focused on what gives my life meaning.
That shift made a significant difference in my overall sense of happiness.

The Path to Happiness: Choosing Work and Valuing Family
Choosing the Right Work for Myself
Work is an essential part of life, even for someone with a disability.
But instead of working simply to survive, I realized:
“I must choose work that brings meaning and purpose to my life.”

✅ A job that allows me to work at my own pace
✅ A career that provides a sense of accomplishment
✅ Work that respects my health and well-being

For me, blogging and counseling are ideal.
Helping others through my work brings me deep fulfillment, which is much more lasting than temporary pleasure.

The Happiness Found in Time Spent with Family
For someone with a disability, family is an irreplaceable source of support.
✅ Spending time with my wife
✅ Engaging in simple, meaningful conversations
✅ Appreciating the mutual care and support we share

Being with loved ones doesn’t just provide emotional comfort—it creates a foundation for true happiness.

Choosing Happiness as a Way of Life
Prioritizing My Own Values Over Others’ Expectations
Society is full of expectations like:
✅ “You should live this way.”
✅ “This is what a normal life looks like.”

But the key to happiness is understanding:
“What makes ME truly happy?”

✅ Living according to my own beliefs, not social norms
✅ Not forcing myself to meet society’s expectations
✅ Choosing a path that aligns with my health and values

Aiming for a Life of Contentment Over Fleeting Pleasure
✅ Focusing on long-term fulfillment instead of instant gratification
✅ Finding work that is meaningful rather than just profitable
✅ Creating a life I can feel truly content with

This is the kind of happiness I strive for.

Conclusion: Are You Happy?
“Am I happy?”

I don’t claim to have all the answers yet.
But one thing is certain:
✅ Happiness is not found in chasing momentary pleasure
✅ Choosing work and relationships that align with my values brings lasting fulfillment
✅ True happiness comes from living a life that feels right for ME

If you have been questioning your own happiness, I want to encourage you:
“Choose the path that genuinely brings YOU joy.”

Life is full of choices. And the happiness you seek is shaped by those choices.
I hope that your life will be filled with the kind of happiness that truly resonates with you.
