“Everyone has their own values.” It’s a phrase often used to dismiss societal distortions. But what happens when those values fail to prioritize children? Can such an approach truly be justified?

What I feel is frustration. Frustration toward local politics, neighborhood associations, and adults who prioritize their own convenience and interests over the future of the children who live in our communities.

Local Politics Turning a Blind Eye to Children
Local politicians and governments often claim to promote “policies for children.” However, in reality, their actions tend to favor short-term economic gains and adult conveniences over the long-term well-being of children.

For instance, looking at budget allocations, the portion designated for children’s education or welfare is often minimal, while substantial funds are directed toward road maintenance and organizing events. Instead of prioritizing “creating an environment where children can grow up safely,” it seems their focus lies on “building achievements for the next election.”

Everyone knows children are the future of our communities. And yet, investments in their future are consistently sidelined. This reality is deeply frustrating.

Neighborhood Associations Catering to Adults
Neighborhood associations suffer from the same problem. Many are run according to “adult convenience,” with meetings and events designed primarily for senior citizens, making it difficult for children and their parents to participate.

For example, while children’s playgrounds are being removed, considerable funds are allocated to senior-friendly facilities and activities. This imbalance further alienates children from their communities.

Additionally, some associations complain about the lack of involvement from younger generations. But is this really the fault of the young? How many associations have made genuine efforts to create environments where younger generations feel welcome?

Adults Who Don’t Prioritize Children
What frustrates me most is the attitude of adults who interact with children daily but fail to take their presence seriously.

It’s understandable that work and family responsibilities leave little time for community involvement. But using “I’m too busy” as an excuse not to engage in community events or listen to children’s voices only exacerbates their isolation.

Some adults even think, “They’re not my kids, so it’s not my concern.” The more this mindset spreads, the more disconnected children become from their communities.

The Dangerous Excuse of “Everyone Has Their Own Values”
“Everyone has their own values” is often used as a convenient excuse. But within a community, the perspective of prioritizing children shouldn’t be dismissed as just another personal opinion.

Children are the future of the community itself. When adults neglect that future, they are essentially abandoning their own community.

What We Can Do
So, what can we do to address this?

Increase Opportunities to Hear Children’s Voices
Neighborhood associations and community events should create spaces for children to express their opinions. This can help the community as a whole recognize their importance.

Shift Adult Mindsets
Adults need to move away from the “this doesn’t concern me” mentality and embrace the idea that raising children is a shared responsibility across the community.

Advocate for Political Change
We can also urge local politicians and governments to prioritize policies for children. Individual actions can spark change in the broader community.

A community that doesn’t prioritize its children is a community without a future. Adults must reflect on what truly needs to be protected and prioritized in their actions.

Too much has already been lost under the excuse of “everyone has their own values.” Recognizing this reality and taking a step forward is the first step toward shaping a better future.
