In our daily lives, we are constantly surrounded by change. The seasons shift, times change, and our relationships with others deepen or sometimes fade away. Change itself can be both beautiful and, at times, cruel. Amidst this ever-changing landscape, we may sometimes find ourselves wondering, “Is there anything in life that truly doesn’t change?” The answer to this question may lie in the Buddhist teaching of “Shogyou Mujou,” or the concept of impermanence.
Shogyou Mujou teaches us that everything in this world is always changing, never staying the same. When we hear the word “impermanence,” it might evoke a sense of sadness or fragility. However, this teaching is not meant to be cold or disheartening. Instead, it’s a guide, helping us to discover what is “unchanging” within ourselves, even as the world around us shifts.
“Finding the Unchanging Within the Ever-Changing”
When we hear about impermanence, we might think that everything simply fades away. But there is, perhaps, something unchanging even amidst life’s constant transformations. Take, for instance, the emotions we experience. Feelings such as joy, sorrow, love, and gratitude have been with us since ancient times and remain today, regardless of how much the world evolves. Although what moves us may differ over time, the capacity to feel deeply is timeless and universal.
Another example is the concept of connection. The teaching of impermanence reminds us that all things are interconnected and exist in relation to one another. Everything in this world influences something else, creating a web of connections through which life flows. This “interconnectedness” is a fundamental principle, one that does not change despite the transformations we witness around us. Seeing the world through this lens of connection may be one way to recognize what is unchanging.
Self-Discovery: Finding “Your True Self” Amid Change
Moreover, one of the things that remains constant is our pursuit of self-discovery. No matter how much things change around us, we all ponder questions like “Who am I?” or “What is truly important to me?” This search for identity, for what makes each of us unique, is something that remains unchanged over time. Self-reflection can be challenging and even lonely at times, but in that journey, we often uncover something invaluable—our “true selves.” And this personal truth can be deeply relatable to others. After all, each of us feels a certain unease in the face of change, coupled with a longing to hold onto something steadfast. By sharing our stories, we can touch the hearts of others who may feel the same way.
Living the Teachings of Impermanence
The teaching of impermanence does not simply present us with a harsh truth. Rather, it encourages us to find the “unchanging” within ourselves and live with the support of that inner truth. Even when faced with life’s many changes, if we recognize what is stable in our own hearts, we can navigate those changes with resilience. Change may be inevitable, but the values and beliefs we hold dear can serve as guiding lights.
No matter how much the world around us may change, the things we truly value will remain steadfast. Embracing change while holding onto these values may be the key to living authentically in the spirit of Shogyou Mujou.
In Closing: Nurturing a Peaceful Heart in Changing Times
As times change and people come and go, each of us continues on a journey to find our own “unchanging” truth. And we are not alone on this journey. We walk together, sharing feelings of connection, empathy, and understanding. In this shared journey, we may even find that something “unchanging” begins to emerge through our relationships with one another.
The teaching of impermanence helps us to live peacefully in the face of life’s uncertainties, and, ultimately, it leads us to what we’ve been searching for all along—our inner unchanging essence. I hope that together, we can find and share in this journey toward discovering what truly lasts.
