The Story of How I Couldn’t Fit into “Normal” Society but Rediscovered My Individuality

Spread the love

In a society that values conformity, many of us feel the pressure to fit into what’s considered “normal.” We follow school rules, abide by unspoken workplace codes, and navigate relationships by reading the room. This is what I thought it meant to be “normal” and how one had to live to be a part of society. I, too, put in great effort from a young age to blend into this “normal.”

However, no matter how hard I tried, I could never truly fit in. It felt like trying to force a puzzle piece into the wrong place—it just didn’t work. Still, as I grew older, the responsibilities and expectations of adulthood increased, and with them, the pressure to conform became even greater.

It all reached a breaking point when I experienced a life-altering event: I became disabled. After a hemorrhage on the right side of my brain, part of my body stopped working. Things I used to take for granted suddenly became impossible. In an instant, all the effort I had put into being a useful member of society felt meaningless.

But, surprisingly, this experience brought me a profound sense of relief. Until then, I had been trying so hard to fit into society’s definition of “normal.” Yet, becoming disabled freed me from those societal expectations and allowed me to rediscover my true individuality.

What Does “Individuality” Really Mean?
For me, individuality isn’t about having some special talent or standing out from the crowd. It’s about recognizing and cherishing my own values and way of living. Becoming disabled forced me to confront my limitations and vulnerabilities. However, it also gave me the chance to acknowledge strengths and possibilities within myself that I had never noticed before.

In the past, I had been so caught up in meeting societal expectations. But after I became disabled, I felt as though society had “abandoned” me. Ironically, this perceived abandonment became my ticket to freedom. No longer did I have to struggle to fit in. And in that moment of release, I was able to fully embrace my individuality.

How Parallel Life Saved Me
Through this experience, I discovered the concept of “parallel life.” A parallel life is about living according to one’s own values, choosing multiple ways of being, instead of sticking to one path dictated by society. As a disabled person, I found new options for how to live, and through that, I was able to rebuild my life in a way that felt authentic to me.

For example, through counseling and writing this blog, I’ve been able to share my experiences with others, giving them encouragement and hope. Instead of focusing on society’s version of “normal,” I’ve centered my life around what I truly value. This is my expression of individuality, and living a parallel life has allowed me to create a richer, more meaningful existence.

Embracing a Life True to Your Individuality
Perhaps you, too, have felt at times that you don’t quite fit into what society considers “normal.” Maybe you’re tired of trying to meet the expectations and rules that have been set for you. If so, there is something I want to tell you: Don’t lose sight of your individuality.

It’s okay to be different. In fact, it’s in those moments of difference where your true individuality shines. Just like me, stepping back from society’s pressures can allow you to reconnect with who you really are. And by embracing that individuality, you can live a life that feels freer and more fulfilling.

Stop trying to mold yourself into society’s definition of “normal.” Instead, choose a path that aligns with your own values. That’s how you can truly express your individuality, and that’s the key to living a life that not only makes you feel at peace but also inspires those around you.

Through living a parallel life, I’ve found freedom, joy, and a sense of purpose. I hope my journey can inspire others to see that life doesn’t have to be limited to societal expectations. There are other ways to live, and they can lead to a deeper, more authentic sense of fulfillment.

If this blog resonates with you, if it has given you any sense of connection or insight, I’d be grateful if you could share it with others. I hope it can help others realize the beauty of honoring their own individuality and living a life that truly belongs to them.
