Everyone experiences doubt. Life presents an infinite number of choices, and there may be no such thing as a “right path.” However, it is precisely this uncertainty that makes us human and leads us to a richer, more meaningful life. As someone living with a severe acquired disability, I deeply feel the weight of this uncertainty while still seeking meaning in my existence.
The Courage to Face Uncertainty
A disability can completely upend what once seemed like an ordinary life. Work, daily activities, relationships—everything becomes an unfamiliar challenge, and uncertainty takes hold at every turn. Situations I never thought about when I was able-bodied now demand careful navigation, and every step forward is accompanied by fear and inner conflict.
“Is this the right path?” “Could I have made a better choice?”—These thoughts torment me daily. But in the midst of such struggles, I have come to a realization: uncertainty is not a bad thing. In fact, it is proof that I am alive.
Growth Comes from Uncertainty
Humans are constantly evolving. A choice that seems right today may feel wrong tomorrow. Still, every step taken amid uncertainty holds meaning. Having a disability does not mean I should be afraid of doubt—it means I should embrace it and move forward at my own pace.
For example, after becoming hemiplegic, I could no longer work as I had before. But that very limitation led me to discover a new path. Through blogging, I found a way to express my thoughts and connect with people. It was precisely because I continued to struggle with uncertainty that I arrived at a place I never imagined.
The Depth and Richness Found in Uncertainty
A life filled with uncertainty can be difficult and heavy to bear. Yet, within that uncertainty lies profound learning and newfound values.
Living with a disability has allowed me to witness kindness in ways I never did before. The seemingly ordinary moments of everyday life became precious. Being supported by others taught me the value of gratitude. Understanding the struggles of others helped me develop deeper empathy. These realizations only emerged because of the uncertainty I faced.
Furthermore, questioning everything forces us to think deeply and confront our true feelings. It is through uncertainty that we come to understand ourselves and discover our own unique answers.
Embracing Uncertainty as a Source of Pride
There is a common belief that one should charge forward without hesitation. But is a life without doubt truly fulfilling?
Uncertainty is not a weakness. It is evidence that we are seriously considering our lives and searching for our own paths. The presence of doubt does not mean failure—it means possibilities still exist. It is only by embracing uncertainty that new doors can open.
Instead of fearing doubt, we should welcome it and continue searching for our own answers. This is not just a mindset for those with disabilities—it is a fundamental aspect of being human.
A Life of Uncertainty is a Beautiful Life
In the end, we are all beings who live in a constant state of uncertainty. Regardless of whether we have a disability, there is no absolute right answer in life. That is why uncertainty is not something to be ashamed of, but rather something to take pride in.
At times, uncertainty can be painful and overwhelming. But it is through these struggles that we grow and deepen our understanding of life.
It is precisely because we continue to question and search that life is beautiful.
That, in itself, is the essence of living.
