Feeling Like a “Deflation Spiral”—The Loneliness and Sadness on Night Duty Nights

Spread the love

Living with a disability presents countless small challenges every day, and I face each one to move forward. However, there are still moments when I feel the darkness creeping into my heart. These moments tend to occur especially on nights when my wife is away for her night shift. The loneliness and stillness of those nights often feel like I’m being pulled into what can only be described as a “deflation spiral.”

Today, I want to share my experience of this spiral on such nights, hoping that it resonates with those who might be battling their own loneliness and fears. If this article brings even a little comfort or encouragement, then my efforts will be worthwhile.

The Quiet Void of Loneliness
When my wife leaves for her night shift, the house, which usually feels warm and full of life, suddenly turns quiet. This silence doesn’t bring peace; instead, it amplifies the loneliness. Not having my reliable partner beside me makes me feel like a part of my soul has gone missing.

To fill this void, I try listening to music, reading books, or reaching out to friends. But deep inside, there’s a voice that whispers, “None of this will truly help.” That voice pulls up memories of past regrets and uncertainties about the future, creating a snowball effect of negative thoughts that grows bigger and heavier with each passing moment.

The “Deflation Spiral” in My Heart
You might be familiar with the economic term “deflation spiral,” where falling prices lead to reduced spending, which in turn worsens the overall economy. When I first learned about this concept, I realized how closely it mirrors my emotional state during these nights.

A small feeling of sadness or loneliness invites fears and self-doubt, which then intensifies the sense of isolation. This vicious cycle can make it incredibly hard to break free.

For example, a simple “I miss her” can escalate into “What if something happens to her?” or “How will I manage on my own?” Eventually, this spirals into thoughts like “Why am I even in this situation?” or “Am I just a burden to those around me?”

Finding Comfort in Connection
Carrying these feelings alone can be overwhelming. But the moments that have saved me are those when I’ve come across voices from others who’ve been through similar experiences or when someone has shared a kind word of understanding.

Feeling lonely or anxious isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s proof of being human and a reflection of the desire to connect with others. Through this blog, I want to tell anyone who might be feeling the same way: You are not alone. I, too, have nights where I feel lost in loneliness and fear, but I strive to face them and prepare myself to welcome the next day.

Support Gives Strength
If you’ve ever experienced something similar, I would love to hear from you. Your comments or sharing this post would mean so much to me. By sharing our experiences, we can lighten each other’s burdens and take a step forward together.

Your support for this blog not only encourages me but also helps bring a sense of connection to more people who might need it. I hope to continue sharing my thoughts and experiences, believing that they might offer courage to someone else out there.

Believing in the Strength to Move Forward
Loneliness and sadness are feelings that visit everyone at some point, but facing them head-on is the first step toward building resilience. You don’t have to bear the weight alone; sharing it with others can make it surprisingly lighter.

If this post brought even a little brightness to your day, that would mean the world to me. Thank you for reading to the end. And if you feel comfortable, I’d love to hear your story too. Let’s face these challenges together and keep moving forward!
