Hello, everyone. As someone who became severely disabled later in life, I face challenges every day that shape how I view the world. This holiday season, I want to share a topic close to my heart: universal manners. While the term may not be familiar to everyone, it represents something crucial that anyone can practice in their daily lives.
In this article, I will explain what universal manners are, share my personal experiences, and discuss how we can create a society where everyone feels more comfortable and included. I hope this post inspires you to take your first step toward a more inclusive world.
What Are Universal Manners?
Universal manners refer to the thoughtful behaviors and actions that help create a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, including people with disabilities, the elderly, pregnant women, and parents with small children.
Imagine these everyday situations:
Stepping aside to make room for a wheelchair user boarding a train.
Letting a parent with a stroller use the elevator first.
Speaking slowly or offering to write things down for someone with hearing difficulties.
These actions don’t require special skills—just a bit of awareness and empathy. Universal manners are about noticing the people around you and considering their perspective.
Why Universal Manners Matter to Me
When I became disabled, I suddenly found myself in a position where I needed special accommodations to navigate life. Things I once took for granted—like walking up a flight of stairs or finding an accessible restroom—became significant obstacles. I also experienced stares and insensitive comments, which were disheartening.
Yet, I’ve also been deeply moved by small acts of kindness. A station staff member assisting me with a smile, or a stranger creating space in a crowded elevator, were moments that gave me strength.
I believe it’s not just about receiving support; as a disabled person, I also strive to practice universal manners. Showing empathy to others, thanking those who help me, and contributing to mutual understanding are small but essential steps toward a more connected society.
How I Plan to Spend This Holiday Season: Learning and Sharing
This holiday season, I want to focus on two key actions: learning (input) and sharing (output). Here’s what I have in mind:
1. Learning (Input)
Researching the latest updates on disability support and accessibility.
Reading personal stories from others with disabilities to broaden my perspective.
Understanding the challenges faced by people with disabilities different from mine.
2. Sharing (Output)
Using my blog and social media to share what I’ve learned and experienced.
Providing specific, relatable examples to make universal manners easier to understand and adopt.
Suggesting ways to build stronger connections between people with and without disabilities.
A Call to Action for Readers: Let’s Spread Universal Manners Together
To everyone reading this, I have a simple request: Take the first step by learning about universal manners and applying them in your daily life. Even small actions can make a big difference.
Start with something manageable:
Offer your seat to someone who might need it more.
Approach someone who seems to be struggling and ask if they need help.
Reflect on your own actions and think about ways to improve.
These small gestures don’t require special abilities—they’re things anyone can do to make a positive impact.
Looking Ahead to the New Year
As we enter 2024, I aspire to be a “bridge” that helps spread awareness and understanding of universal manners. Through this blog, I hope to learn with you, act alongside you, and take steps toward creating a better society for everyone.
This holiday season, why not take some time to discover what you can do to make a difference? Sharing this post is one small way you can help spread the message.
Thank you for reading to the end. I wish you all a joyful holiday season and a wonderful start to the new year. I look forward to your support, shares, and comments!
