Regaining the “Power to Live”: Preparing for a Future Without Social Security

Spread the love

In recent years, concerns about the future of Japan’s social security system have been growing. With an aging population, declining tax revenues, and ballooning fiscal deficits, many fear that the day may come when “today’s social security system can no longer be sustained.”

For those of us living with disabilities, this anxiety is an everyday reality. Questions like, “What if disability pensions are discontinued?” “What if medical expenses increase?” or “What if I lose my safety net?” constantly haunt our thoughts. However, dwelling on these fears won’t change the situation. Instead, we must look beyond them and prepare ourselves by cultivating the “power to live.”

The Scenario of a Social Security Cutback
The possibility of Japan “running out of resources” is not as distant as we might hope. Many local governments are already facing financial difficulties, leading to cuts in welfare services. This is evident in the closure of welfare facilities, reductions in subsidies, and increases in personal medical expenses.

If this trend continues, we could face the elimination of critical social security benefits such as disability pensions, public assistance, and medical support. Such a scenario would force many people to lose their foundation for daily living and risk falling into social isolation.

However, despair is not the answer. What we can and must do is prepare for this future by developing the “power to live.”

The Power to Live = The Ability to Earn
So, what does “the power to live” mean? It refers to the skills and mindset needed to survive under any circumstances. Among these, one of the most essential is the “ability to earn.”

In the past, Japanese society revolved around traditional full-time employment. However, for those living with disabilities, working full-time is not always feasible. Moreover, as the structure of traditional employment itself begins to collapse, it becomes crucial to secure alternative sources of income.

This is where concepts like “parallel work” and “side gigs” come in. These approaches involve diversifying income sources rather than relying on a single job. Examples include blogging, social media marketing, freelance translation, remote work, and selling handmade goods—all of which are accessible through the internet.

Expanding Possibilities with Parallel Work
The greatest advantages of parallel work are its flexibility and diversity. You can choose when and where to work based on your lifestyle and health conditions, making it an ideal approach for those with disabilities.

Parallel work also offers a form of “risk diversification.” For instance, if one job doesn’t go well, you can rely on other income streams to compensate. This serves as a personal safety net, reducing dependence on social security.

Taking the First Steps Toward the Power to Live
How can we begin to develop the “power to live”? Here are some practical steps:

Identify Your Strengths
Start by listing your skills and interests. These could potentially lead to income opportunities.

Start Small
Don’t aim for large-scale earnings right away. Begin with small projects, such as writing a blog or selling handmade items at a flea market.

Develop New Skills
Learning new skills is essential. Digital skills, in particular, are invaluable for internet-based work. Take advantage of online courses and free resources to gradually enhance your capabilities.

Leverage Communities
Don’t try to go it alone. Connect with others who share similar goals to exchange information and offer mutual support.

Focus on Consistency
The key to success is consistency. Even if you don’t see immediate results, persistence will open up new opportunities.

Preparing for the Future
Developing the “power to live” is about more than just financial independence. It’s the foundation for a richer, more fulfilling life that allows you to live authentically.

The prospect of losing social security may be daunting, but by taking proactive steps now, we can equip ourselves with the strength to overcome such challenges. Through parallel work and side gigs, we can expand our possibilities and fortify our ability to live.

Why not take that first small step today? Let’s prepare for societal changes together, building a freer, more secure future.
