The Reality of a Marriage Between a Disabled and a Non-Disabled Partner

Choosing Acceptance Over Closing the Gap

When a disabled person and a non-disabled person marry, many people imagine a dramatic journey of “overcoming the barriers of disability.” However, in reality, it’s nearly impossible to completely close the “gap” between the two. Instead, acknowledging the gap and choosing to accept its existence can be the key to building a richer and more sustainable partnership.

In this article, I’ll share insights from my own experiences and those of others, focusing on the keyword: choosing acceptance over closing the gap.

Understanding the Gap
What exactly is the “gap” between a disabled and a non-disabled partner?

It’s not just the physical differences. It’s also the invisible aspects: the frustration and social isolation that a disabled person might feel, or the pressure and unconscious guilt that the non-disabled partner may carry.

For example, while the disabled partner might struggle with feelings of inadequacy, the non-disabled partner might silently worry, “Am I doing enough to support them?” These misalignments often lead to everyday misunderstandings.

Trying to close this gap can lead to one partner overextending themselves or suppressing their own needs, creating further strain. This is why it’s crucial to not aim to close the gap, but rather to accept it as part of the relationship.

Acceptance Brings a New Perspective
In many relationships, there’s an emphasis on “understanding each other.” While this is important, it’s nearly impossible for two people from such different circumstances to fully understand one another.

So, what can be done? The answer lies in shifting from “understanding” to “acceptance.”
Acceptance means not trying to change your partner but respecting them as they are. Here are some practical ways to embrace this mindset:

Acknowledge the Unknown
The non-disabled partner might need to admit, “I can’t fully understand what it’s like to live with a disability,” and the disabled partner might need to accept, “My partner will sometimes feel frustrated or conflicted.” This mutual acknowledgment is a powerful first step.

Focus on What’s Possible
Instead of dwelling on what the disabled partner cannot do, both partners can focus on what is achievable and celebrate those efforts. Similarly, the non-disabled partner doesn’t need to take on everything—finding a balance that works for both is key.

Create Space for Emotional Sharing
While complete understanding may not be achievable, taking time to express how each of you feels can bridge emotional distances and foster a deeper connection.

How the Gap Can Strengthen the Relationship
The gap itself isn’t inherently negative. In fact, it can bring unique opportunities for growth. Efforts to navigate the gap often deepen the bond between partners. Additionally, the existence of a gap allows each partner to maintain individuality while respecting each other’s differences.

One couple I know shared a moving story about acceptance.
The disabled wife once broke down, saying, “It hurts that you can’t understand my struggles.” Her husband replied, “You’re right—I can’t fully understand. But when you’re hurting, I’ll always be by your side.”
That simple yet honest statement helped her come to terms with her feelings and embrace the gap as part of their journey together.

In Closing: Building a Future Together
Marriage between a disabled and a non-disabled partner is often a mix of challenges and inspiring moments. By letting go of the pressure to close the gap and choosing acceptance instead, new possibilities emerge for the relationship.

Marriage, whether or not disability is involved, is not about changing each other but about acknowledging and respecting each other’s differences. This is the essence of “choosing acceptance over closing the gap.”

If you’re feeling frustrated in your partnership, consider letting go of the idea of closing the gap. Acceptance may allow light to shine into your relationship in ways you never expected.

My partner and I are still walking this path together, and I invite you to join us in exploring this beautiful, imperfect journey.
