Politics is Complicated: Understanding the Flow from the 1955 System to Today

Recently, my wife has started taking an interest in politics. The spark? The Hyogo governor election. Since then, she’s been peppering me with daily questions like, “How does Japanese politics even work?” When I tried to explain the flow from the “1955 System” to the present day, her expression screamed, “What?” Indeed, Japanese politics is undeniably complicated.

This article aims to simplify this “complicated politics” and deliver it in a way that resonates with readers, sparking both understanding and curiosity. Even if you’re not familiar with politics, let’s uncover some “aha!” moments together.

What Was the “1955 System”?
Let’s start with the “1955 System.” When you hear this term, it might conjure up images of rigid politics from the Showa era. But this concept is key to understanding Japan’s political history.

In 1955, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) was established. Simultaneously, the Japan Socialist Party unified its left and right factions, forming a two-party structure. The system’s hallmark was a “one strong, many weak” dynamic, with the LDP holding overwhelming dominance while other parties struggled to compete effectively.

Stability, But at What Cost?
The system’s main advantage was stability. Backed by robust local support and economic growth, the LDP maintained political dominance, guiding Japan to become an economic superpower. However, this stability came at a cost: politics grew distant from the people.

For example, a sentiment of resignation—”No matter what, the LDP will win”—took root. Voter turnout declined, and political apathy became widespread. Politics became something that felt irrelevant to everyday life.

The Bubble Burst and Political Transformation
The 1980s marked the peak of Japan’s bubble economy. Companies and individuals alike thrived, further diminishing interest in politics. However, when the bubble burst in the 1990s, the mood shifted dramatically.

Economic crisis exposed widespread corruption within the LDP, epitomized by the Recruit Scandal, where political-business collusion came to light. Disillusioned, the public’s trust in politics wavered. This led to a historic moment in 1993 when the LDP lost power, breaking the 1955 System.

The Fall of the 1955 System and a New Era
In 1993, Japan experienced its first significant political turnover. The Hosokawa Cabinet was formed under a coalition of parties, excluding the LDP and the Communist Party. This marked a new chapter in Japan’s political history.

However, this era also saw frequent changes in government. Short-lived administrations failed to provide the stability voters hoped for. Eventually, the LDP regained power, and the 2000s were characterized by longer-term administrations.

Modern Politics and Its Challenges
In recent years, Japan’s political scene has been relatively stable, particularly under former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s long tenure. Yet, challenges like economic stagnation, population decline, and the COVID-19 pandemic continue to test the system. Meanwhile, the rise of social media and online platforms has brought politics closer to people but has also created information overload, making it harder to discern the truth.

Why Is Politics So Complicated?
The complexity of politics lies in its layered history and intricate systems. Furthermore, political movements and policies often feel inaccessible or opaque to the general public. For instance, during the 1955 System, the lack of visible change in policies made it hard for people to see how politics impacted their lives.

In today’s digital age, the abundance of information can make politics even harder to grasp. Sorting through conflicting news and opinions can feel overwhelming, pushing many to disengage entirely.

Taking the First Step Toward Political Awareness
Even if politics feels complicated, staying disengaged isn’t an option. Politics affects our daily lives in countless ways. The key is to start with the basics—understanding history and systems—and gradually build on that knowledge. Keeping up with current events through reliable news sources can also help make politics more relatable.

My wife’s newfound interest in politics has been a fantastic opportunity for us to explore these topics together. It’s proof that no matter how “complicated” something seems, it can be understood with curiosity and a willingness to learn.

Let’s Think Together About Politics and Our Future
If this article has left you thinking, “Politics really is hard to understand,” that’s okay. What matters is the spark of curiosity—wanting to know just a little more. That small step can be the start of a journey toward understanding how politics shapes our world.

Why not dive into the “complications” of politics with someone close to you? You might uncover insights that change the way you see society.

Yes, politics is complicated. But by understanding it, we gain a clearer view of the society we live in.
