Have you ever encountered a piece of work that profoundly impacted your life? Something that completely shifts your worldview, crumbling your previous values and leaving a deep impression in your heart? For me, that work was Osamu Tezuka’s Phoenix: The Chapter of Ho-o.
It was this very story that led me to embrace parallel life. Perhaps you’ve also experienced how a book, film, or piece of art significantly influenced your way of living. However, Tezuka’s Phoenix was not just another story. It became a profound question to me, asking, “What is life?” and “How should one live?”
What is Phoenix: The Chapter of Ho-o?
Phoenix: The Chapter of Ho-o is a story about human desires, karma, and the quest for eternal life. Within this work, Tezuka delves into the essence of life and reincarnation, framed by a vast scale that transcends time and space. The story contrasts two characters, Gao and Akanemaru, who follow different desires and life paths, ultimately leading to their downfall.
The Phoenix, symbolizing eternal life, reveals the limitations and helplessness of humans. As I encountered this overwhelming narrative, I felt my own preconceived notions about life fall apart. Up until that moment, I had been solely focused on pursuing one career path, cutting off other possibilities. But through this story, I realized that “life doesn’t have to be bound to just one path.”
What is Parallel Life?
Parallel life is the pursuit of multiple careers and ways of living simultaneously. For me, it shattered the conventional belief that I had to follow only one path in life, opening up new possibilities for exploration.
This decision was heavily influenced by the message within Phoenix: The Chapter of Ho-o. The Phoenix observes human desires and attachments from a distant, almost cold perspective while repeating cycles of rebirth. Similarly, I felt that I didn’t need to be tied down to one single career path, but instead, I could continuously reinvent myself and explore new challenges.
Lessons from Phoenix on Life’s Choices
The characters Gao and Akanemaru reflect the struggles we face in our daily lives. Despite his physical handicap, Gao expresses himself through relentless determination, which inspires courage to surpass one’s limits in parallel life. On the other hand, Akanemaru, obsessed with beauty and power, meets his downfall because of these attachments. His failure teaches the importance of not being captivated by material desires or external success.
The reason I chose parallel life is closely tied to the philosophy and message within Phoenix. Instead of clinging to one path, I believe in exploring various careers and lifestyles, which has allowed me to live a freer and richer life.
The Power of an Overwhelming Worldview
The expansive world of Phoenix: The Chapter of Ho-o offers readers a new perspective. In our daily lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the notion that we must choose just one path. However, Phoenix teaches us that “there is not just one option.” By pursuing multiple ways of living or careers, we can broaden our horizons and continuously reinvent ourselves.
Through this blog post, I hope that you too can feel the deep message of Phoenix: The Chapter of Ho-o. Just as I committed to parallel life, I hope this story encourages you to broaden your own possibilities and take bold steps in new directions.
We may only have one life. But how we choose to live that life is entirely up to us. Just as Phoenix teaches us, the cycles of rebirth and challenge are things we create for ourselves. Through the choice of parallel life, I believe we can continue to reinvent ourselves and carve out new futures.
