Hello, and thank you for visiting my blog. In this article, I’d like to share the importance of embracing a scientific perspective—a lesson I’ve learned through my experiences as someone living with a severe disability. This perspective has not only helped me navigate life’s challenges but also allowed me to approach reality with calmness and clarity. I believe this mindset can benefit anyone facing difficulties in life.
Thinking in Numbers: Making the Invisible Visible
After becoming disabled, I had to be acutely aware of how I allocate my energy throughout the day. From daily chores to work, hobbies, and rest, everything revolves around how I distribute my limited energy and time.
For instance, when I used to rely on feelings like “I think I can still push myself” or “I’ll be fine if I try harder,” I often found myself utterly exhausted the next day. However, thinking in numbers has changed everything. By imagining my daily energy as a “100-point budget,” I allocate 30 points for household tasks, 50 points for work, and 20 points for rest. This numerical approach has helped me avoid overexertion and maintain a stable routine.
Numbers may seem cold at first glance, but I’ve come to see them as a kind guide, ensuring that I don’t overreach and providing clarity to make better decisions.
Accepting Facts: Balancing Emotion and Reality
When I first became disabled, I struggled to accept my new reality. I constantly asked myself, “Why did this happen to me?” But no matter how much I questioned it, I couldn’t find an answer. Instead, I felt more and more overwhelmed.
One day, during rehabilitation, a therapist said something that changed my perspective:
“Why not start by accepting the facts in front of you?”
This simple suggestion became a turning point. Acknowledging the fact that “I had a stroke, and my left side is paralyzed” allowed me to focus on the next step: rebuilding my life through rehabilitation and adjustments. Accepting facts doesn’t mean giving up; it’s the first step toward progress.
The Limits of Asking “Why?”
“Why?” is a fundamental question we ask to understand the world around us. It’s also an essential driver of human curiosity and scientific discovery. However, there are times when asking “Why?” becomes unproductive and even burdensome.
For instance, I used to dwell on the question, “Why did I become disabled?” While medical science may offer explanations, seeking an ultimate answer only deepened my frustration. Instead, I shifted my focus to a different question: “What can I do to improve my life from here?” This shift allowed me to explore solutions, such as effective rehabilitation techniques and support systems.
Sometimes, letting go of unanswerable questions can free us from unnecessary mental weight and open the door to actionable steps forward.
What Does It Mean to Understand?
The feeling of “I understand” is often subjective. However, from a scientific perspective, understanding means being able to replicate a process and explain it to others. This mindset can also be applied to our daily lives.
For example, I often share tips on managing life with a disability on my blog. These tips are not based on vague ideas but on practical methods that I’ve tried and found effective. By presenting these ideas in a way that others can easily replicate, I aim to make my experiences relatable and helpful to a broader audience.
True understanding fosters connection and allows us to share knowledge that can positively impact others.
The Power of a Scientific Perspective: Finding Courage to Face Reality
Adopting a scientific perspective doesn’t mean suppressing emotions. Instead, it’s about finding a balance between feelings and facts. By using numbers to visualize situations, accepting facts as they are, knowing when to let go of unanswerable questions, and striving for clarity in understanding, we can navigate life’s challenges more effectively.
I hope this article offers you some insights or practical tips to apply in your own life. If it resonates with you, I would be delighted if you shared it with others. Together, we can build a supportive and understanding community.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I wish you strength and clarity as you move forward.
