Hello, everyone. Today, I’d like to delve into the theme of “impermanence” in modern life, drawing from “The Hojoki,” written by Kamo no Chomei in the late Heian period.
“Impermanence” is a Buddhist teaching that everything is constantly changing. In our modern society, we live daily amidst relentless changes such as technological advancements and social structure transformations. In this environment, how does the teaching of “The Hojoki” resonate with our hearts?
Kamo no Chomei chose to leave behind the opulent court life for a simple existence in a small hut. This was more than just a change of residence. It was a decision to seek internal peace rather than being swayed by the external world’s fluctuations.
We, too, face various changes in our daily lives: moving homes, changing jobs, evolving relationships – all part of “impermanence”. However, these changes can also bring opportunities for new self-discoveries and growth.
A crucial lesson from “The Hojoki” is how we respond internally to external changes. Although we tend to be influenced by our surroundings, maintaining inner calm allows us to embrace change positively.
The story also teaches us to accept the temporariness and inevitability of change. This is vital as we face daily challenges and difficulties. Embracing change not as something to fear, but as an opportunity for growth, can enrich our lives.
Finally, like Kamo no Chomei, changing our physical environment can offer new perspectives. A change in location can impact how we interact with our inner world, paving the way for fresh discoveries and growth.
What do you think? How should we perceive and accept “impermanence” in our lives? Please share your thoughts in the comments. That’s it for today. Thank you for reading!
