Living true to oneself is a beautiful ideal. However, in reality, it’s not always so simple. In the midst of relationships, responsibilities, and the various roles we juggle, revealing our true feelings isn’t always an option. Society and the expectations of those around us often push us to hide our true selves. Yet, I firmly believe that living by the principle of “I don’t want to lie to myself” has a unique value. In this article, I’d like to share some thoughts on the importance of staying true to our inner selves and living in alignment with our truth.
Facing the Challenges of Living Authentically
The words “it’s important to live authentically” may resonate with us, but they often provoke contemplation. Living authentically isn’t as easy as it sounds. Especially for those of us who take on various responsibilities in life, it’s not always feasible to be true to ourselves 100% of the time. Life situations, such as family, friends, or work, sometimes lead us to compromise, choosing harmony over honesty.
Still, there’s great meaning in holding onto the mindset of “not lying to myself.” It doesn’t mean confronting every situation with blunt honesty, but rather acknowledging our true feelings within ourselves. Even if we must act against our inner desires occasionally, it’s important to remember it’s our choice. Maintaining this inner alignment—knowing how we truly feel—keeps us from losing our sense of self.
Choosing to Stay Close to Our Truth
Keeping harmony with others while staying in touch with our own truth can be challenging. However, refraining from overly suppressing or ignoring our genuine feelings is crucial to staying grounded and true to ourselves. Even if we don’t voice our true feelings, recognizing them internally can help us avoid feeling lost or disconnected from who we are.
Living close to our truth often means embracing discomfort. Facing our true selves can reveal weaknesses or shortcomings we may prefer to ignore. I, too, feel my own limitations and setbacks at times, but choosing to accept those feelings brings a sense of relief. By not denying our genuine emotions, by facing them head-on, we find we’re able to live in a way that feels more authentic.
Our Truth and Empathy for Others Can Coexist
Embracing our truth doesn’t mean rejecting or confronting others. Respecting others’ views while valuing our own helps build more natural relationships. When we suppress our truth for others too often, those relationships may become imbalanced, eventually bringing us inner discomfort.
It’s possible to care for others without sacrificing our own truth. A life where our truth and empathy for others coexist may be the key to more sustainable and fulfilling relationships.
Insights Gained from Practicing a Parallel Life
In practicing parallel life, I’ve encountered various perspectives and ways of life. Experiencing diversity has helped me stay more flexible and true to myself. Through diverse experiences and encounters, I’ve become more aware of where my truth lies and when I’m prone to compromising it. This awareness supports me in living authentically and embracing my own path.
The Courage to Live Without Lying to Myself
Living true to oneself takes a certain amount of courage. It means focusing less on how society or others perceive us and more on what we truly want. With this courage, we take responsibility for our lives and are able to live in a way that’s truly “ours.”
In closing, I hope that even a little bit, everyone can try incorporating the principle of “not lying to oneself” into their lives. You may not always be able to show your true self outwardly, but you can honor your truth within. By listening to that quiet voice inside, we can walk a path that feels truer to who we are.
