My life mission is to promote the idea of “living a life of self-care.” This is not just a motivational slogan; it is a way of life rooted in my own experiences as a person living with a severe mid-career disability. Through my journey, I have learned that self-care is the foundation for cultivating empathy and acceptance, which in turn foster a kinder, more supportive society.
My vision is a world where everyone can live each day by caring for themselves, extending kindness to others, and creating a community built on mutual understanding and compassion.
The Turning Point: Discovering the Power of Kindness
Ten years ago, I suffered a sudden stroke that damaged my right brain and left me with paralysis on the left side of my body. Before this life-altering event, I lived a fast-paced life, fulfilling social roles and meeting expectations. I rarely took the time to listen to my own needs, both physical and emotional.
But this unexpected disability forced me to stop and reevaluate my life. The journey of rehabilitation was filled with challenges, fear of the unknown, and moments of despair. Yet, throughout this journey, I encountered acts of kindness and empathy that gave me the strength to move forward.
The rehabilitation staff, my family, and my friends accepted my limitations without judgment and helped me focus on what I could still do, rather than what I had lost. Their acceptance and empathy became the foundation for me to begin accepting myself. Without their kindness, I might never have found the courage to rebuild my life.
Acceptance and Empathy: The Roots of Kindness
At the core of “living a life of self-care” lies self-acceptance. This acceptance allows us to connect with others through empathy, creating a ripple effect of kindness that can transform society.
During my rehabilitation, I met others who were also living with disabilities. Sharing our experiences created a profound sense of connection and understanding. These moments of empathy helped me realize that I was not alone in my struggles. They also taught me an important truth: caring for yourself enables you to empathize with and support others.
Acceptance and empathy are not one-sided. They are cultivated through mutual respect and understanding. This exchange of kindness goes beyond individuals, reaching families, communities, and ultimately, society as a whole.
Small Steps Toward a Kinder Society
Living a life of self-care is not about selfishness; it is about taking the first step toward building a kinder society. When we listen to our own needs and accept ourselves, we naturally become more aware of and sensitive to the needs of others.
For example, offering a seat to someone on public transport is not just a kind gesture. It is an act of recognizing and empathizing with their situation, transforming that awareness into action. These small moments of kindness, repeated daily, create a foundation for a more compassionate world.
Having received so much kindness from others, I now feel a strong desire to pay it forward. This blog is one way I hope to share that kindness and inspire others to do the same.
The Purpose of This Blog
Through this blog, I aim to share the importance of “living a life of self-care.” My goal is not to prescribe solutions or impose values but to help readers listen to their inner voice and find their unique way of embracing self-care.
Living a life of self-care is not about making grand changes. It begins with small actions, such as forgiving yourself for mistakes, celebrating small victories, or acknowledging your limits. These small steps can gradually transform into acts of kindness toward others.
For instance, taking a break when you’re exhausted or reaching out to someone when you feel lonely are simple but meaningful acts of self-care. These small actions not only nurture your well-being but also foster compassion and understanding for those around you.
A Vision of a World Connected by Kindness
My vision is a society where everyone prioritizes self-care, which in turn fosters empathy and acceptance toward others. This chain of kindness can spread across the world, creating an environment where everyone feels safe to be themselves.
By reading this article, you are already part of this vision. I encourage you to take a moment today to practice self-care and appreciate your own value. That small act of kindness to yourself will ripple outward, touching the lives of those around you.
Together, let’s create a world where kindness connects us all.
