Choosing a Parallel Life to Support a Lifework

What image does the term lifework evoke for you?
Perhaps it refers to something you dedicate your life to—an activity or work that brings you a sense of fulfillment every day. However, as we pursue our lifework, we may face challenges such as limited resources or changing circumstances that force us to reevaluate how we approach it.

For years, I’ve poured my heart into counseling as my lifework. Yet, in recent years, I’ve come to realize the importance of managing my resources more efficiently amidst a busy lifestyle. Starting in 2025, I’m determined to continue my work with a fresh approach: preserving my lifework while embracing a parallel life as a more flexible way of living.

The Current Challenges in Counseling
For many years, counseling has been my passion and priority. Supporting individuals, listening to their struggles, and helping them find solutions has been deeply fulfilling. However, the reality is that I now have less time and energy to dedicate solely to this work due to other professional commitments and personal responsibilities.

I’ve reached a point where I realized:
“If I keep pushing myself this hard, I might break.”

This moment of clarity prompted me to rethink my approach. Counseling, after all, requires emotional investment and energy, and to offer high-quality support, I must maintain my own mental and physical well-being. This understanding has led me to shift my focus toward sustainable practices, where I continue to serve others but in a way that respects my own limitations.

A New Approach: Prioritizing Word of Mouth and Referrals
Going forward, my counseling work will prioritize word of mouth and referrals. In the past, I’ve relied on advertising and broad client outreach. However, I’ve realized that such methods make it challenging to maintain the quality of my services. By narrowing my focus to clients I connect with through trusted referrals, I can ensure deeper, more meaningful interactions.

This shift to referrals is deliberate. It builds on trust—something that’s already established when a new client comes to me recommended by someone they know. Starting with a foundation of trust provides reassurance for both the client and myself, leading to a more productive counseling relationship.

Embracing a Parallel Life: A Flexible Approach to Work and Life
This shift in focus aligns with the concept of parallel life, where one pursues multiple roles or careers simultaneously instead of being confined to just one. Adopting a parallel life allows me to balance my work, personal growth, and responsibilities more effectively.

In my case, counseling is just one of the many roles I undertake. While it remains a critical and cherished part of my life, I see it as one component of a broader tapestry of activities and responsibilities. By diversifying my efforts, I can maintain financial stability and gain experiences that enrich my counseling work.

Parallel life isn’t just about managing multiple roles; it’s about finding synergy among them. The skills and perspectives I gain from other work naturally feed into and enhance my counseling practice, creating a dynamic cycle of growth and improvement.

My Vision for 2025
With this new approach in mind, I’ve set three key principles to guide my work from 2025 onward:

Maintaining Quality
By working with a smaller number of clients, I can dedicate more time and attention to each individual, ensuring high-quality support.

Flexible Scheduling
I will balance my counseling work with other commitments, adopting a schedule that prevents burnout and allows for personal well-being.

Continuous Self-Development
Lifelong learning and self-improvement will remain at the core of my work, helping me offer even greater value to my clients.

A Lifework That Resonates
Some may wonder, “Are you sacrificing your lifework?”
The answer is no. Instead, I’m redefining it. By adjusting my approach to align with my current circumstances, I’m ensuring that I can continue to pursue my lifework authentically. Striking a balance between dedication and sustainability benefits not only me but also the clients who rely on my services.

What Is Your Lifework?
As you read this, you might already have a lifework—something you are passionate about. Or perhaps you’re still searching for it. Either way, remember that your lifework doesn’t need to remain fixed. It can evolve as your life circumstances and priorities change.

If you feel drawn to something, start small and let it grow naturally. And if the time comes to adapt your lifework, don’t hesitate to embrace a new approach. These changes may enrich your life in unexpected ways.

Starting in 2025, I will embark on this new journey, guided by the principles of parallel life and a reimagined lifework. I hope this blog inspires you to reflect on your own lifework and consider how you might shape it to better suit your unique life path.

Let’s explore together:
How can we support our lifework in a way that aligns with the life we want to live?
